What the cell phone companies don’t want you to know

Last time, I shared with you why our eyes are ill equipped for looking at screens for long periods of time.

Today, I’d like to talk about the changes that cell phone usage has placed on our bodies.

You see, a particular car model is designed for a particular use. Sedans are for city driving, trucks are for hauling stuff, and Jeeps are for rough roads out in the woods.

When you drive your sedan out into the woods, you’re adding extra wear & tear on the car. It’s simply not designed to carry out that task day in & day out.

And that’s exactly what we’re asking our bodies to do when we use cell phones on a daily basis or, for some of us, when we’re glued to our cell phones.

To start, we bend our heads down ever so slightly to look at our phones. That adds extra tension on the neck.

We type on a tiny screen with our fingers. People get ‘text claws’ as a result. Stiffness, pain, numbness, you name it.

I’m not saying get rid of cell phones. For one, I’m totally dependent on them myself.

What I’m saying is, these devices we depend on have a lot of side effects. Be aware of them & proceed with caution.

Here is a list of possible side effects of cell phone usage:

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Eyestrain
  • Neck tension
  • Headaches
  • Back pain
  • Lack of focus
  • Foggy brain
  • Anxiety & depression

If this makes sense to you, try figuring out how you can cut down your cell phone usage just a tad, saying 20%. Do it for two weeks & see how you feel.

Share with me here your experience of cell phone usage & whether you plan to cut it down & how.

Why your eyes need extra care now more than ever

We live in a modern world that’s complicated & harder on our eyes than any other time in history.

A few generations ago, rarely anyone stared at screens. There were no personal computers. Even 20 years ago, the majority of us didn’t look at screens that much.

That was before the invention of smartphones. Millions of years of evolution produced our eyes, which are highly complex & amazingly intricate. Now, they aren’t able to meet the demands of today’s devices.

While out in nature, our eyes can look far, as far as the sky. They can zoom in & out, and look at a prick on your fingertip.

We look around from object to object, rarely staying focused on one image for long. Try staring at a leaf & see how long you can focus on it.

Our eyes have not evolved to stare at fine print on a screen, especially for long periods of time. This particular demand has been thrust upon them; they simply haven’t had much time to adapt.

As a result, we get eyestrain, which can lead to headaches, back pain & eye disease.

Most of us don’t realize that our eyes get strained, nor do we associate back pain, neck pain, or headaches with spending too much time looking at screens.

Fortunately, there are things that you can do to reduce the damage of a modern, device-based life on your eyes. I’ve got 3 simple exercises for you to relieve the eyestrain.

Share with me how you plan to make this a permanent tool in your toolbox!

What’s Missing in Your Self-Care Routine?

Years ago, I had a friend who was married to a rich guy & drove a Mercedes Benz.

One time, at a party, she told us that her husband had bought her a Jaguar when they got married. She had only had it for a few months.

One day, when she was getting off the highway, she noticed that there was smoke coming out of the hood. She pulled off the ramp & got out right away. The engine was fried.

“I don’t like Jaguar,” She declared. “I have no idea what all of those lights are for,” she added.

She was lucky that it was only a car & that he was rich.

Just like an expensive sports car, your body is a machine that requires maintenance to run at its best. You can replace a car, but you can’t replace your body. What warning signals are you unknowingly ignoring?

One simple way to care for your car is to make sure that the tires are inflated; that way, they last longer & you get better gas mileage.

One simple thing you can do for yourself is to not carry any stress. You can manage your stress & reduce tension with this simple exercise at the end of each day.

If you are not familiar with tapping, start with these two videos:

1. Introduction to Tapping

2. The Technique of Tapping

It will help you have less aches & pains, sleep better & enjoy life more.

5 Surprising reasons that you are frustrated

We have all been frustrated.

When the traffic is really bad.

When a friend says that she would call at 4pm and by 8pm she hasn’t called.

Being frustrated is uncomfortable. It makes us do something quickly to diffuse it. That’s why there is road rage. That’s why we snap at our friends and family.

Long-term frustration can wreak havoc on our relationships, our jobs, and our health. It can lead to migraines, high-blood pressure, and other issues.

Knowing what might make you frustrated ahead of time can help you laugh at your predictable reaction, and thus diffuse the intensity of the frustration.

Here are some surprising reasons that you might get frustrated.

  1. Taking Medication
If you are taking loads of vitamins or medicine, your body might be dealing with a lot of toxins. That overloads your liver and causes frustration.
  2. Staying up late
If you stay up after 11:30pm or, worse yet, after midnight, you are not giving your gallbladder and liver chances to recuperate.
  3. Consuming Oily Food
Fried & high fat foods also cause your liver to work overtime. Any time your liver is overworked, you are more prone to frustration.
  4. Not Giving Yourself Enough Time
When you underestimate the amount of time or resources needed to get things done, you may also get frustrated.
This happened when I upgraded my computer earlier in January. I had planned to do it in one afternoon. Instead, it took me a couple of weeks to complete the transition. Boy was I frustrated!
  5. Entering Spring
Believe it or not, the spring season also makes us more susceptible to frustration. Good thing that summer is right around the corner.

One simple way to deal with frustration is to make the sound ‘shhh’. It’s a simple way to quiet the internal voice that’s unhappy. It’s not to shut anyone else up.

A client of mind has successfully used it to calm his road rage. Driving became much easier for him.

3 Ways to stop waking up at night

One of the main reasons you wake up several times during the night is that there are too many toxins in your body. This could be happening for any number of reasons:

  • You drink caffeine or alcohol.
  • You take prescription medication.
  • You eat food that has pesticides or additives.
  • You clean your house with products that contain chemicals.
  • You use electronic devices that emit formaldehyde and other chemicals.

Whatever the reason, your body is overloaded with toxins. Your liver, the body’s factory for detox, works overtime just to keep things afloat.

Your liver works the hardest from 1 am to 3 am; that’s nature’s design.

When the liver has to work extra hard, it can wake you up during that time period. Once you wake up, either your sleep becomes really shallow, or you simply stay awake until 5 am.

Fortunately, there are ways that you can give your liver a hand.

  1. Make the sound ‘shh’.
You can make the sound ‘shh’ when you’re doing something mindless, like driving or washing dishes.
  2. Rock the liver.
Your liver sits directly under your right rib cage. Place your palms over the liver and rock it (and your body) as if rocking a baby.
  3. Massage ‘Great Rushing’, the 3rd acupressure point on the liver meridian.
Run your thumb from the web between your 1st and 2nd toes straight up towards your ankle. You’ll come to a bony spot. About halfway between the bony spot and the web is ‘Great Rushing’. Dig deep into this area, and you’ll find a tender spot. Massage that spot.

Leave me a comment below. Try these tips & let me know how they work for you. Also, let me know what sleeping difficulties you have so I can address them in the future.

How to calm yourself when you are in a tough spot

There are times when the stress of life gets too much. Your body is tense. You don’t sleep well. You get depressed. Things just don’t go your way. Everywhere you turn, something bothers you & someone bothers you.

There’s no ease to be found in the moment.

Recently, I went through a week just like that. It was a really long week. I had been travelling more than usual. There was paper piled up everywhere. My to-do list was several pages long. I’d also been doing in-depth research on trauma & the stories that I read were quite disturbing.

I thought that I was doing a good job managing stress, by using every healing technique that I know of. During the day I felt fine, but in the middle of the night, the tension in my body would wake me up.

It was then I decided to do something that I hadn’t done in a while; something that I cycle through every now and then. That’s the technique I’m sharing with you in the video below with simple sounds and movements.

Try this and let me know your experience by leaving a comment below.

Peace & blessings to you!

How to stop people from draining you

You are a kind and caring person.

You care about your family & friends, so you listen to their concerns & worries. You support your colleagues, students, clients, or patients through whatever challenges that they are facing.

You also care about the world that we live in, so you pay attention to what’s going on in the news.

AND you’re just tired at the end of the day.

On top of that, you don’t sleep well, even though you’re tired.

People are weighing you down. Their problems stress you and drain your energy. You don’t have to know it for it to happen. The body secretes stress hormones when it detects issues, not when you sense those problems.

The good news is that you can cleanse yourself quickly with a simple guided meditation: White Light Shower Meditation.

It’s similar to jumping into a quick shower after sweating at the gym. It’ll keep you more refreshed & less burdened by other people’s problems.

Best yet, you can do the white light shower anywhere, any time. It takes 60 seconds. I recommend doing it at least once a day when you get home from work.

Share your experience with me about other people by leaving a comment below. I’d love to hear how you’ll use this meditation too.
